Responsible gambling: limits, signs, and tools

Last updated 24 September 2026

How deposit limits, time limits, and self-exclusion work, and which warning signs mean you should stop and get help.

Entertainment has a price you choose in advance

Gambling products, including the casinos discussed on this site, are built to take a margin over time. A good night does not repeal that. Responsible gambling, in the practical sense, means you decide the money and the time before you start, you use tools that make those decisions stick, and you stop when play is no longer a choice you would defend to someone you trust. This page is for adults. If you are under 18, or under 21 where that is the legal age, you should not open an account at all.

If you already know you want to stop and the decision feels urgent, leave this article and use the help directory. It lists Gambling Therapy for worldwide online support, plus mental-health and crisis lines in India and Pakistan. Those lines are not all gambling-specific. They are the right call when mood, safety, or family strain is the immediate problem. The rest of this guide is the slower version: tools and signs, for a moment when you can still plan.

Limits that work are limits you cannot casually raise

A deposit limit caps what you can add in a day, week, or month. A loss limit caps net losses. A time or reality check interrupts a session. The useful versions apply a cooling-off period before an increase. A limit you can raise in one tap is a preference, not a control. When you compare operators, look for the control in the account menu before you look at the bonus. Our choice guide puts that step in the same list as the licence check, because a brand without a limit tool is asking you to supply all the discipline yourself, on a phone, next to a deposit button.

Set the number from a budget, not from a feeling about tonight's luck. Money for rent, wages you need this week, school fees, and borrowed money are not a bankroll. If the only way the night works financially is a win, you are not in a position to play. Lower the limit from a laptop if the phone makes you impulsive. Then log out. A remembered session is an open cashier.

Signs that the plan has slipped

Chasing is the clearest sign. You raise the stake or the deposit to get back to even, and the original limit becomes a number you negotiate with. Other signs are quieter. You hide the cashier, the time, or the messages. You think about the bonus expiry more than you think about sleep. You use a second account because the first one is limited or excluded. You feel irritable when someone interrupts a session. You believe a due win is being held back by the game. None of these require a dramatic loss to count. They are reasons to stop this week, not reasons to stop after one more try.

People around you often see it earlier. If someone you live with says the play is a problem, treat that as data. Shame pushes people toward secret accounts and personal-wallet transfers that also happen to be how fraud works. Secrecy is a risk twice. If you are supporting someone else, you do not have to police their phone. You can tell them about Gambling Therapy and the local lines, and you can refuse to lend money for deposits. Lending "just this once" so they can win it back is chasing by proxy.

Cooling-off, self-exclusion, and blocking software

A cooling-off period closes the account for a short set time: a day, a week, a month. Self-exclusion closes it for longer and should be resistant to a same-day reversal. Use the tool inside each brand you have used. Exclusion at one site does not close the others. That is a reason to keep the number of accounts small. After you exclude, remove the apps, the bookmarks, and the saved passwords. Marketing email will keep arriving unless you unsubscribe and, where the law gives you the right, tell the operator not to send offers.

Device-level blocks and bank gambling merchant blocks add friction. They are not perfect. A determined person can find a new brand. Friction still helps on the ordinary evening when the urge is strong and short. Ask the bank what category blocks they support. Combine that with an exclusion, not as a substitute for one. If a casino lets you cancel an exclusion by chatting to an agent for five minutes, that tool does not deserve the name, and the brand does not deserve a place in a careful comparison. Tell the publisher if you see that behaviour on a brand we list.

Bonuses are a poor reason to stay

Welcome matches and reloads are designed to extend play. A wagering clock that is about to expire will suggest another deposit. You can forfeit the bonus. Forfeiting is often cheaper than finishing. The arithmetic is in bonus wagering explained. Read it once, in daylight, not while a timer is on screen. T&Cs apply to every offer on this site, and none of them are a reason to play with money you cannot lose.

Affiliate sites, including this one, earn a commission when someone uses a tracked link. That is compatible with a stop message only if the stop message is easy to find and the buttons are not aimed at minors or at countries we claim to exclude. Our disclosure sits next to the comparison table. If you are in the middle of deciding whether to click, assume the honest answer might be no. Closing the tab is a complete use of the page.

What to do this evening if you want to stop

Log out of every gambling account. Turn off notifications from those brands. Tell one person you trust what the limit was and that you have stopped for now. If you might still click, install a block or hand the payment method to a safer routine, such as leaving the card at home. Book a time to talk to a service on the help page if the urge is loud or if you feel unsafe. You do not need a polished speech. You need a person whose job is to listen.

If you are not stopping forever and you are sure you are allowed to play where you live, the minimum standard is still a deposit limit, a declined bonus until you understand it, and no borrowed money. Reviews on this site are written for that reader. They are not written for anyone trying to get even. Come back to the help page whenever the standard slips. It will still be in the footer.
