Bonus wagering explained

How casino wagering requirements, game weights, expiry, and max-bet rules change the real cost of a welcome match.
What wagering is asking you to do
A casino bonus is extra balance with a job attached. Wagering, also called playthrough or a rollover, is the amount you must stake before the operator will treat bonus-derived winnings as withdrawable cash. It is not a tax you pay in cash on the way out. It is turnover. You place bets, the stake total climbs, and until it reaches the requirement the cashier usually blocks a withdrawal of that balance or cancels the bonus if you try.
The number in front of the x is meaningless until you know which balance it multiplies. "25x bonus" on a 1,000 bonus is 25,000 of stakes. "25x deposit plus bonus" on a 1,000 deposit and a 1,000 bonus is 50,000 of stakes. Advertisements often show the match percentage in large type and the formula in a terms page. Read the formula. The pages for TD777, 899U, and Cedar Room each print a key-terms line so you can see a multiple next to a real offer, then check it against the live cashier because those lines are editable sample facts.
A worked example with a small deposit
Suppose you deposit 2,000 and take a 100% match. Bonus credit is 2,000. At 25x bonus, you stake 50,000. At 30x bonus, you stake 60,000. At 25x deposit plus bonus, you stake 100,000. None of those figures is the amount you must lose. They are the amount you must bet. Each bet can win or lose. The house edge means the average result of a large wagering journey is a loss of some fraction of that turnover, which is why a bigger match can be a worse offer. You are not owed the bonus as cash.
Now change the match to 50% on the same 2,000 deposit. Bonus credit is 1,000. At 20x bonus you stake 20,000. The headline looks mean next to a 100% banner and the required journey is shorter. That is why Playledger tells you to compare totals. A lower percentage with a lighter multiple can beat a loud match you will not finish. If you will not finish it, decline the offer and play with cash, or do not play.
Game weights change the total again
Weights decide how much of a stake counts. At 100%, a 100 stake reduces the requirement by 100. At 10%, it reduces the requirement by 10. At 0%, it reduces nothing, and it may also breach the rules if that game is excluded during a bonus. Slots are often 100%. Table games and live dealer games are often low or zero, because their house edge is smaller and a skilled or slow game would otherwise clear a bonus too cheaply for the operator.
If you like roulette, a slots-weighted bonus is not a gift. It is a request that you play a different product. Either decline, or accept that you are choosing slots for the length of the promotion. Do the weight division before you opt in. A 50,000 requirement at 10% contribution is 500,000 of table stakes. People miss that zero and feel cheated by arithmetic they could have done in a minute. Write the weight next to the multiple. Both numbers are the offer.
Expiry, max bet, and excluded stakes
Expiry is a clock on the bonus, sometimes on the winnings as well. Seven days and fourteen days are common in the sample terms on this site. When the clock ends, unfinished bonus money is removed. Plan sessions on a calendar. Do not deposit more near the deadline to sprint through the rest. That sprint is how a promotion becomes the month's largest loss.
Max bet is a ceiling on each spin or hand while the bonus is active. One spin over the cap can void the bonus and the winnings tied to it. The cap is often small. Bonus-buy features, some jackpots, and some live tables are excluded entirely. Excluded play may not count and may be treated as a breach. Read that list in the live terms. T&Cs apply even when a comparison site reprints a short version. If the short version and the long version disagree, believe the long version on the operator's site, and ask the publisher to correct the short one.
Declining a bonus is a normal choice
Cashiers often pre-select the welcome offer. Untick it, screenshot the unticked control, then deposit if you still want to test a withdrawal. Cash has no wagering clock and no max-bet clause. You can still lose it. You will not lose it because you misunderstood a weight. For a first look at a brand, a declined bonus plus a small cashout teaches you more than clearing a match you did not need.
Reloads, cashback, and free-spin packages are new contracts. Free spins usually credit winnings as bonus with their own multiple, and the stake per spin is fixed by the operator. Cashback can be cash or bonus. Read which. Never assume yesterday's welcome terms cover today's reload. If the screen will not show the terms before you accept, do not accept. That opacity is a reason to lower your opinion of the brand, including the opinion stored as a rating on this site.
How this sits next to safer gambling
Wagering requirements are designed to keep you playing. That is their commercial purpose. A long requirement is not a personal challenge to complete. If you notice yourself raising the stake to finish faster, or depositing again so the expiry does not "waste" the bonus, stop and decline further offers. Those are the moments the maths is doing the job the operator hoped it would do.
Set a deposit limit before opt-in. If the account has no limit, or the limit can be raised instantly, consider that a product defect. Help lines and a longer discussion of warning signs are on the responsible gambling guide and the help page. You do not have to finish a bonus you have started. Forfeiting it and walking away is allowed, and it is often the cheapest move left on the table.
